Summer Reading: Part Three



Can you take the excitement? So many reviews. Still looking for something to read this summer?


I just finished this book. Why oh why do I do it? Why do I read celebrity memoirs? I never like them and I end up being seriously bugged by the actor/actress who wrote it. This one was no different.

I read this book solely because I love...and I mean LOVE...this book:

and this movie:

...even though it wasn't the best movie adaptation of a book.

I put the blame squarely on the shoulders of my old babysitter, Andy Fullmer. She was in high school and was reading this book and declared it to me (at the time a 4th grader) that it was the best book ever written. She began reading me little excerpts from the book. But then I became a little over zealous always demanding that she read the book aloud and she finally told me to bug off and read the book myself. Well, that was a scandalous thought to me in the 4th grade. How could I, who was currently enjoying the likes of Superfudge by Judy Blume, read a high school book? But read it I did and it opened Pandora's box. By the end of fourth grade I had moved on to The Thornbirds and all kinds of other interesting books. But The Outsiders remains as one of my all-time favorite books.

Andy Fullmer solidified her status as best babysitter ever by purchasing me a magazine that was a collectors edition for the movie (which I still have) and taking me to the movie when it opened. Awesome!! I have since introduced many a friend, cousin, spouse and child to the lovable Curtis Brothers and their gang of greasers. And ...for the record...Stevie Wonder's "Stay Gold" is on my ipod.

So back to my original point...I read this book for the promised inside information about the filming of The Outsiders. I did enjoy that part. But I wanted more.

As for Rob Lowe...lame...just as I suspected.

My Rating: Okay...solely for the inside information about the filming of The Outsiders.

I read this one and the one below for something to read with my kids.

I love sharing books with my children...the whole family for that matter...and I love it when I find something that all of us can enjoy aka The Harry Potter Series. This series...not so much. I think that if I didn't always compare everything to Harry Potter I might have liked the series more. I did love sharing mythology with my children...brilliant concept!! So although this series did not hold my attention, my children enjoyed the books and they are the intended audience...not me.

My Rating: Okay...could have been better.


I enjoy the Pioneer Woman's blog and her recipes. They are really good. I wish this book was good but it isn't. I like a good love story. I enjoy finding out how people met and fell in love. But not for page after page of a cheesy novel. Yes, we get it. He is a hot cowboy...he has muscles...he looks good in his wranglers. But do we need to read it multiple times in every chapter? The writing is not great...her voice and personality come across better on her blog.

That said, I did laugh out loud a few times and that is saying something right?

My Rating: Okay. Fluffy and Cheesy...but fans of her blog will probably enjoy it.
