Autumn Book Reviews

Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel

I don't usually read post-apocalyptic books. They always make me feel uneasy and uncomfortable. Not my favorite reads. This one, however, has gotten some good reviews and some excellent recommendations from friends. So I put it on my "to read" list. Then when I was at the library one day, the librarian told me that Emily St. John Mandel was coming to Spokane to discuss her book, and I was sold. She comes next week and I am excited to hear her discuss her novel.

From Goodreads:

An audacious, darkly glittering novel set in the eerie days of civilization's collapse, Station Eleven tells the spellbinding story of a Hollywood star, his would-be savior, and a nomadic group of actors roaming the scattered outposts of the Great Lakes region, risking everything for art and humanity.

One snowy night Arthur Leander, a famous actor, has a heart attack onstage during a production of King Lear. Jeevan Chaudhary, a paparazzo-turned-EMT, is in the audience and leaps to his aid. A child actress named Kirsten Raymonde watches in horror as Jeevan performs CPR, pumping Arthur's chest as the curtain drops, but Arthur is dead. That same night, as Jeevan walks home from the theater, a terrible flu begins to spread. Hospitals are flooded and Jeevan and his brother barricade themselves inside an apartment, watching out the window as cars clog the highways, gunshots ring out, and life disintegrates around them...Spanning decades, moving back and forth in time, and vividly depicting life before and after the pandemic, this suspenseful, elegiac novel is rife with beauty...A novel of art, memory, and ambition, Station Eleven tells a story about the relationships that sustain us, the ephemeral nature of fame, and the beauty of the world as we know it.

Yep, this book made me feel just as uneasy as all the rest. But the word I would use to describe it is...interesting. Did I absolutely love it? No, but I did find the premise of actors and musicians roaming the land with a traveling orchestra interesting.  I also like thinking about how the arts help make us human and feel human even in the worst conditions. I enjoyed the layered and non-linear storytelling. The author did a fantastic job of weaving in and out of time, place, and the lives of  the various characters. The problem, for me, was that with so many characters each telling their own story we don't get to know any of them very well. I was left wanting more. I wanted to know Kirsten, Arthur, Jeevan, Clark, and Miranda better. I wanted more depth. I guess I also wanted more conflict. I felt like there was a big build up and then it petered out.

For example, I was so excited for Kirsten to come face to face with Clark and realize who he is and how he relates to Arthur. They meet and then Clark says something like, "Come talk to me tomorrow." and then NOTHING. We are never privy to their conversation; even though Kirsten has spent her whole life collecting information and articles about Arthur Leander and I have spent the entire novel waiting for all the pieces to come together. To my dismay, the story just picks up several months later when the traveling orchestra is moving on and the reader never knows what Clark says to Kirsten.  I felt like there were several instances like that in the book. I also wanted to learn more about Station Eleven and it's symbolism. (Maybe I am the only one that didn't really get it.)  So while interesting, the novel left me wanting more. I am looking forward to hearing the author speak and maybe I will get what I was missing. We shall see.

My Rating: Interesting but I was left wanting more. (Tyler read the book too and he felt the same way.) I also feel like I should read King Lear now. :)

Paris Time Capsule by Ella Carey

A girl inherits a Parisian apartment from a stranger. Girl opens the door and finds that it has been untouched for 70 years. A true time capsule of the early 1900s during the Belle Epoque and full of vintage treasures, priceless paintings, love letters, and even more exciting to me...loosely based on an actual place and events. Sold!  Of course I wanted to read this book!! Hand it over!!

From Goodreads:

New York–based photographer Cat Jordan is ready to begin a new life with her successful, button-down boyfriend. But when she learns that she’s inherited the estate of a complete stranger—a woman named Isabelle de Florian—her life is turned upside down. Cat arrives in Paris to find that she is now the owner of a perfectly preserved Belle Époque apartment in the ninth arrondissement, and that the Frenchwoman’s family knew nothing about this secret estate. Amid these strange developments, Cat is left with burning questions: Who was Isabelle de Florian? And why did she leave the inheritance to Cat instead of her own family?

Yes, I liked it. How could I not? It was full of everything I love. I was hooked by the details and descriptions of the apartment and it's contents. When I was a little girl and my family would go on terribly long 12 hour road trips to visit my grandparents. I would spend most of the entire trip staring out the window searching for old abandoned houses and wondering what was inside of them. I couldn't imagine anything better than stumbling upon an old abandoned house full of old furniture, clothing, books, letters, and journals. I still can't!!

In the town where I used to live when I was ten, there was a house kind of like this...we called it Baby Blue Eyes' House. This house was an old Victorian looking farmhouse that had been partially burned. Legend had it that it was the home of the most darling baby...called by her parents...baby blue eyes... and who tragically died in a house fire there. Legend had it that she haunted the place. (I have no idea if we made up that "legend"...a very real possibility... or if we heard that from someone else.) Anyway,  of course I wanted to go and check that house out. I recall many summer days when my sisters and I, and our awesome neighbors the Ropers, would ride our bikes to that infamous house and go exploring...which we were forbidden to do... but did anyway. (All our parents worked full time and so we spent our summers largely unsupervised. It was AWESOME!!)  I can still see that house so clearly in my mind. The burned area, the peeling vintage wall paper, broken furniture, the old stove in the kitchen, and old Life magazines littering the floor. We would roamed around looking for treasures and constantly asking each other "Do you hear a baby crying?" and would then run screaming from the house. One day our daring neighbor, Brad, climbed the old burned out stairs to find out what was upstairs and came down pale, wide-eyed, and holding a glass baby bottle. We nearly died!! We had to ride our bikes immediately to the candy store as fast as we could and stuff our faces with as many pudding pops as possible until we could calm down.

ANYWAY... all that to say that I loved the premise and the story. Sure, the characters are slightly cheesy and one dimensional. Sure, the dialogue is lame at times. Big whoop...the apartment and it's contents were awesome. Plus, there is some mystery and romance. Ergo, I overlooked the rest. (You don't even want to know the amount of time I have spent pouring over the pictures from the real Paris time capsule apartment.) It's heavenly.

Check it out: HERE

My Rating: Pure fun. Pure fluff. Cool apartment. (The stuffed ostrich...DYING!!)

Wreckage by Emily Bleeker

I thought this book looked intriguing and it was. I think this would be a fun book to discuss for a book club. It had me thinking for weeks after I was done reading it. It's always fun to wonder, "What would I have done?" This novel does just that.

From Goodreads:

Lillian Linden is a liar. On the surface, she looks like a brave survivor of a plane crash. But she’s been lying to her family, her friends, and the whole world since rescue helicopters scooped her and her fellow survivor, Dave Hall, off a deserted island in the South Pacific. Missing for almost two years, the castaways are thrust into the spotlight after their rescue, becoming media darlings overnight. But they can’t tell the real story—so they lie. The public is fascinated by the castaways’ saga, but Lillian and Dave must return to their lives and their spouses. Genevieve Randall—a hard-nosed journalist and host of a news program—isn’t buying it. She suspects Lillian’s and Dave’s explanations about the other crash survivors aren’t true. And now, Genevieve’s determined to get the real story, no matter how many lives it destroys.

I liked it!! I flew through it. The ending though...meh. I'll go ahead and say it. It was ridiculous.  The book needed a big messy wrenching finish. There needed to be some emotional and relationship carnage. Still, I enjoyed it. I found it quite thought-provoking. I liked the back and forth storytelling and hearing what happened from both Lily and Dave's perspectives. Yes, some of the dialogue is cheesy and some characters are more like caricatures...especially the villain. But, I still found it entertaining and engaging.

My Rating: Entertaining and though-provoking except for the ending which is ridiculous. But a month later I am still thinking about the story. So, that says something. I think it would be a fun book for a book club to discuss.

Island Refuge by Kimberly Rose Johnson

This book was free on my Kindle and I was desperate for something to read. Enough said right there. This book has five star ratings after five star ratings. I am baffled.

From Goodreads:

Her engagement off, Zoe Griffin retreats to tiny Wildflower Island in the Puget Sound. Hiding out as a cook and maid at a shabby bed-and-breakfast seems crazy for a chef who’s used to running her own five-star kitchen. And just as she starts to feel at home, her klutzy mishaps make Zoe fear her handsome new boss will fire her. Dr. Nick Jackson is done with medicine, and owning a B&B is as far from doctoring as he can get. He needs help, but his only employee’s mistakes give him doubts. As Zoe lets her defenses down, Nick begins to see a competent and caring woman. One whose wounds are as deep as his own. But as they fall for each other, Nick and Zoe must learn the hardest lesson of all—to forgive. Only then can they heal the past and embrace the future . . . together.

It's Christian fiction. I didn't know that before reading. I don't have a problem with that as I am a Christian who loves to read.. But Christian fiction is always terrible. This book just didn't do anything for me. It was so juvenile...in dialogue, in character development or the lack there of, and in plot. Yeah...not a fan. But keep trying Christian fiction writers and I will keep hoping for the best.

My Rating: Skip it.

Frederica by Georgette Heyer

From Goodreads:

Frederica Merriville and her three siblings have come to London for the glittering social season, in order to give young and beautiful Charis a chance to make a good marriage. Frederica herself, a witty charmer, believes herself happily beyond marriageable age -- she is twenty-four, after all. But when they are introduced to London society by their distant "cousin" Lord Alverstoke, Frederica is amazed to find herself, unknowingly, falling in love. Likewise, Alverstoke, a cold aristocrat, finds himself thoroughly beguiled by Frederica and her young rascal brothers.

I loved it!! It is a completely charming Regency romance and a perfect autumnal read. It was fun and heart-warming. I couldn't put it down.  I was laughing out loud at the the antics of the Merriville family and swooning away at gruff Lord Alverstoke. I wish there was a sequel!! Perfection with a cozy blanket and cup of hot chocolate.

My Rating: Delightful!!

Why Not Me? by Mindy Kaling

I love Mindy Kaling!! Let me just say that right now. I also love her show The Mindy Project. It is my favorite guilty pleasure TV. I also loved her first book, Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? I found it HILARIOUS. This book is more of the same fun. It did not disappoint. It was awesome. I listened to it rather than read it because I wanted to hear her voice and inflection. I highly recommend doing that. I was laughing my head off while I painted. I love her outrageous humor.

From Goodreads:

In Why Not Me?, Kaling shares her ongoing journey to find contentment and excitement in her adult life, whether it’s falling in love at work, seeking new friendships in lonely places, attempting to be the first person in history to lose weight without any behavior modification whatsoever, or most important, believing that you have a place in Hollywood when you’re constantly reminded that no one looks like you...Mindy turns the anxieties, the glamour, and the celebrations of her second coming-of-age into a laugh-out-loud funny collection of essays that anyone who’s ever been at a turning point in their life or career can relate to...

Every time I read a celebrity memoir I always end up disliking them. Sometimes it is just a little bit but usually I end up disliking them a lot. Not so with Mindy Kaling. I like her even more...and that is after two memoirs!!

Like I said I laughed out loud with great regularity while listening. Her Harvard Law School speech was a highlight!! Her relationship with BJ Novak another one. I thought that she gave great advice to  young girls about having confidence... here is just one quote:

“People get scared when you try to do something, especially when it looks like you're succeeding. People do not get scared when you're failing. It calms them. But when you're winning, it makes them feel like they're losing or, worse yet, that maybe they should've tried to do something too, but now it's too late. And since they didn't, they want to stop you. You can't let them.”

I loved this book even more than her last one. I definitely recommend it.

My Rating: Fantastic!! I will read anything that she writes.

September Part 2

September Part 2

We are right in the middle of cross country season. This year we have two runners. Both Kameron and Bryn are running cross country this year and it has been so much fun watching them and cheering them on.

Kameron is running for his high school team. This year there was quite a jump in the expectations from middle school to high school. Kameron has had to push himself much harder than in years past. It is so good for him. Instead of complaining though he really loves his team and has appreciated the experience. He gets stronger and faster each week. I am amazed at the progress he has made.

He has got some cute and enthusiastic cheerleaders too.

He's got a great team!! Lots of talent and amazing coaches too.

Bryn is running for her elementary school. They have such a great cross country program. Kameron did it when he was in elementary school. Then he ran XC for our city program, then middle school, and now high school.

Elle is running XC too. She is coming over to our house before and after school again this year. I can't believe how hard they both work. They have practice 3x a week for an hour. Bryn runs about 11 laps around the school track each time. It is crazy. In the words of Ailey, "I can barely run around once!" (Yeah, me too.) They had their first meet last week and they both did fantastic!!

Bryn was so excited that she got to race against some of her church friends that go to different schools. It was so fun to see so many people from our ward and stake cheering on all the kids. It's awesome!!

I love this shot!! Running fast but still poses for a picture!!

They got to go and cheer on the BYU Men and Womens Cross-Country Teams. BYU came to Spokane for an invitational and they had a great time cheering them on. GO COUGARS!!

Kameron also had his court of honor night at scouts and got a bunch of badges. It was fun to see the slide show from his high adventure camp. Okay, I guess I see the value of scouting. :)

Kameron has had a smooth transition to high school. He really enjoys it. He loves his engineering class, concert band, and jazz band. He is also taking Spanish, AP English and Algebra, and PE. He even goes happily to early morning seminary. He is maturing so quickly and is at that stage where he looks like he is half man and half boy. It is so fun to experience the teenage years with a boy for a change. (Hopefully I don't regret those words. Ha ha.) He is such a good kid and a kind brother. He is currently the president of the teachers quorum at church and takes his responsibilities there very seriously. He works hard and has a pretty great attitude. It's been delightful.

He has also started bagpipe lessons. That is pretty exciting given my Scottish roots. My Grandpa McKinnon would have been so excited about that!!

This is what you practice with at first. It's called a chanter. You learn on it for 8 or 9 months and then you move up to the bagpipes. He is really enjoying it. He very talented musically and is picking it up very quickly. I can't wait to see him in his full regalia!!

(Stolen from her Instagram Account. #selfie)

Reilly is doing fantastic in Utah. She absolutely loves it. She started cosmetology school and is in heaven!! She is so excited and enthusiastic about all the skills that she is learning. I get a call or text every day about what she has learned. I am so glad that she thinks it is a good fit. She kind of struggled there for awhile with whether she wanted to do cosmetology or go to nursing school. I asked her how the other students were and she said, "Awesome!! I am in a school full of Me's!!" That is slightly terrifying but I am glad she has found her niche and her tribe.

(Her official name tag)

She isn't too homesick but she does admit that she misses the family. I appreciate that she calls me every day. It's been fun to share in her excitement. She will be on the floor taking some very brave clients on October 14. She is also meeting all kinds of new people and having a crazy amount of fun. She has a part-time job at the mall in a department store and she likes working there. She is busy, happy, and maturing rapidly. Just how I want her to be.

Ailey is working hard in school and enjoying her new teacher and being in 6th grade. She is looking forward to starting back up with swimming soon. She is busy with activity days, friends, and working on her culinary arts skills. She is such a good cook and baker. I definitely appreciate the help!!

One day she made deviled eggs as an after school snack. They are her favorites and she was so excited to be able to make them herself and to use the egg plate that she asked for at Christmas. Yes, she asks for baking supplies for Christmas.

We are fully back in the swing of things with crazy schedules, homework, lessons, sports and everything. We are still in the process of switching bedrooms. All three needed to be repainted. Kameron has moved downstairs and his new room is nearly done. Ailey should be moved into her new room this week.

I have been super busy preparing for yet another vintage show. I had another one just two weeks after Funky Junk and it was too close!! I need these shows to be spaced a little farther apart!!

Tyler had a check up with his cardiologist and things looked great. Whew. He also had a full kidney check and his kidneys are working like champs!! We have definitely been blessed.

Next Up: The Mad Hatter Vintage Flea Market

September

So Long September

Part 1: Funky Junk and Labor Day Weekend

Today is October 1st. I know so many people love Autumn and I love it's beauty and color but I'm a summer girl. October is like Sunday night to me. I still get the Sunday night willies. I don't know if it is anxiety or stress about the week ahead or thoughts of all that needs to be done. Who knows. I have just never enjoyed Sunday night. The weekend is over and it's time to get back to business. That is what October is to me. A real reminder that Winter is coming. (Winter is a Monday...Spring is a Wednesday...Summer is Friday night. I know, I'm weird.) So while I love pumpkins and colorful leaves and sweater weather, I still wish it was summer.

Onto September which was a fleeting golden gem. This September we had gorgeous weather all month. It's been nice and warm. Sweet! First up in September was Labor Day Weekend. I had a vintage show in Sandpoint, Idaho so all of our family spent the weekend at my mom's house. The Funky Junk Antiques Show that is put on by my friend, Jennifer Wood, is one of my favorite shows to participate in. She always does such an amazing job. It's not super big and it's not too small. It's always fun and it always makes for a nice holiday weekend.

Look how cool this entry display was!! Jennifer's husband, Nathan, built this pioneer style house out of salvaged materials to be the focal point of the show. It was awesome!! He and Jennifer are so creative and we love them dearly.

I completely fell in love with this beauty!! Look how amazing this giant doll house is?! This is my childhood dream of a doll house and still is. I would've snapped it right up if it wasn't about the size of my house already. Ha ha! Lucky for me, my mom bought it for the grandkids. I was thrilled!! We chatted the whole show about how we were going to decorate the rooms.

I can't wait to get started on this!! I texted a picture to my daughters including Reilly and they couldn't believe how awesome it was, then when I texted them that grandma bought it they were squealing with joy. When they saw it in person you would've thought Santa Clause himself was there. They went crazy!! It will be a fun project for the whole family this winter.

But onto the very best surprise of all...I walked into the building on set-up day and couldn't believe my eyes when I saw my sister-in-law Meki standing there with my new little nephew Kirin. We saw them in SLC two weeks before and so I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Then I saw my brother Kirk grinning at me and I lost it. Tears were flowing. Then as I was hugging them someone grabbed me from behind and it was REILLY!! They had come up for a surprise visit over the holiday weekend and had brought Reilly with them. That has been the very best surprise that I have ever had!! The ugly cry and happy sobbing occurred. Family really is everything!! Tyler and the kids hadn't arrived yet so they got to surprise them too by jumping out of a closet at my mom's house. It was the absolute best!! There really is nothing better than my family all under one roof.

Grandma Vic and Kam...her arm still hasn't healed. She may need yet another surgery. Poor lady!

Me and my number one lugger and lifter of heavy furniture!! Kameron too. We treated them to Mexican food for all their hard work.

Yep, still the awkward selfies!! Where do we look?

Then it was onto the show!!

Here is a picture of our triple booth space. I'm on the end with the polka dot rug, Stacey is in the middle and my mom is on the other end. It was a fantastic show!!

Here are a few more pictures of our booth:

This was one of my favorite pieces that I painted for the show...this darling little secretary desk.

It went fast!!

I also loved that marsala colored arm chair that I brought to the show as well. It sold day 1 too.

(Picture taken by Cary Burnett)

After working at the show during the day...we got to have fun with the fam at night.

We had dinner on night at The Dish on Dover Bay. It is one of our favorite restaurants on Lake Pend Oreille.

Terrible picture quality but you feel the love right? We were pretty happy to see this girl of ours!!

Then we got to go back to my mom's house and cuddle our cute nephew...

We are all so in love with baby Kirin.

Our show was a two day show...so we worked during the day and played at night. It was so much fun to have Kirk and Meki and at least part of their family with them.

Ailey and Bryn stopping by the show to see how things were going and to do a little shopping. They can't wait to help out with our business when they get older. I love it!

It was nice to have all the extra help at tear down too. Kirk and Reilly were some much needed hands and muscles. It was an absolutely fantastic weekend. I hated saying goodbye to Kirk and his family and especially to Reilly. But I love knowing that she is so happy in Provo!! I really appreciate Kirk and Meki bringing her with them.

We stopped by the lake on our way home to see my Grandma and to tell her goodbye. She has taken kind of a down hill slide and has since moved to Southern Idaho to be closer to my Aunt Marji. My Grandma is doing amazingly well now and I am so happy that she is happy being there. It sounds like it is the perfect situation for her. She has old friends at her assisted living place. One of my cousins works there and so she gets a lot of visits from family and high quality care. I also love that she now can attend church regularly because they hold Sacrament Meeting at her assisted living place. I miss her though and the lake is definitely not the same.

We popped our favorite bubbly...brought straight from Utah...to celebrate a wonderful weekend and a successful show. We can't find Cold Duck anywhere in Spokane anymore. Boo :(  We also can't find Danish Dessert to make pies and fillings here either...or Apple Beer or Stephen's Cherry Chocolate Hot Chocolate and a bunch of other weird things. Reilly will have to be our little supplier. :)

Next up: Cross Country and More Cross Country
