This year Pioneer Day has special meaning for me. My pioneer ancestors have been on my mind and in my thoughts for several weeks now. It all began with trying to find an ancestor for Reilly to walk in memory of for our Stake Youth's Pioneer Trek. Going through all those family histories on both my side and Tyler's side filled me with such love and appreciation for those faithful men and women who went before me and I was filled with absolute gratitude for their sacrifice and determination; of which we are direct beneficiaries.
I was surprised to learn how many of the youth in our stake in our little corner of the world were direct descendants of members of the Willie-Martin Handcart company (Reilly included). What a special experience it must have been for them to be remembered and honored by their descendants so many generations down the line...just as it was for their descendants to remember them and to get just a taste (3 days and 20 miles) of what they experienced.
