January

January 2019

January is the longest month. Despite the fact that the kids were out of school for what seemed like so many days... with a bunch of early release days and a three-day weekend followed by a four-day weekend. It still felt long and gray. I've tried to change my perspective on January and change a few habits and it has helped somewhat but January is just long.

The month started off with a ton of dental issues. Right before New Years Kameron had a filling come out and with it a chunk of his tooth. This, while a nuisance, shouldn't be huge deal...but it was/is. First, all of the dental offices were closed until after New Years unless it was a serious emergency which it was not. As soon as our pediatric dental office opened we got him right in. But things just went down hill from there. Kameron would need...best case scenario a crown and worst case scenario an implant. For both of those things he would need to go to regular i.e. grown up dentist. He's 18 now so it is probably time to bump him up anyway. We made an appointment with the regular dentist and Kam's tooth situation got more complicated due to some odd genetics. Kameron is missing 3 permanent teeth. They just never formed. This is a weird trait that runs in families and is apparently on my side because my nephew Dane is also missing some permanent teeth. Kameron also only has one wisdom tooth and Bryn has zero wisdom teeth.

The dentist has talked to Kameron in the past about really taking good care of those baby teeth and that they can last a long time. The dentist's dad is in his 70s and was born without a few permanent teeth and still has his baby teeth. The mom of one of the dental assistants at our regular dentist was missing a permanent tooth and she still has her baby tooth and she is also in her 70s.

Anyway...Kameron has been lectured to take good care of those teeth but unfortunately things haven't gone as planned. A few years ago, he got cavities in two of his three baby teeth...the ones that he needs to hold onto. They were filled and things were fine until his filling came out and part of his tooth and of course it was one of those darn baby teeth. Our regular dentist determined that there was no saving that baby tooth. The rest of it needed to come out and Kameron would definitely need an implant. The kicker is that implants take time. After the post is implanted it takes approximately 6 months for it to heal into the bone and then a fake tooth needs to be formed around it. With Kameron's mission looming, getting his tooth fixed puts us on a tight schedule. This month Kameron had three different dental appointments and he is scheduled for his implant in February. The good news is that our dentist used to be in our stake and gave us a huge "missionary" discount which was unbelievably kind as this procedure is expensive despite having good dental insurance.

Meanwhile during the same week before New Years...Tyler also had a toothache and had to wait until after New Years to get it checked out. He had a different dentist that he went to...not the one that is doing Kam's implant...and when he went in he was told that he needed two root canals and maybe a bridge. WTH?! Let me preface this by saying that Tyler has only had one cavity in his entire life...me too...no root canals...no nothing. We both got our first cavities in our 30s. Isn't that weird? Tyler and I have had zero dental issues and our kids have all had several cavities and all sorts of weird issues. Maybe our little weekly dixie cups of fluoride treatments in elementary school in Utah really did the trick and protected our teeth. Maybe we will eventually die of fluoride poisoning but our teeth are strong!

Tyler kept being prompted to get a second opinion and to change our dentist. So since Kam needed a new dentist... Tyler, Kam, and I all switched over to our new dentist...the one that used to be in our stake. Our new dentist was flabbergasted about what our old dentist had told Tyler. Our new dentist said that all he had on one side was a regular cavity that needed to be filled and then on the other side he was just going to fill that tooth as well but if it looked like Tyler needed a root canal once he was in the tooth he would do that also. No bridges necessary! Hallelujah! That sounded so much better! That just goes to show that you really need to find dentists that you can trust! Ailey and Bryn also had their check ups and cleaning and THANK GOODNESS they both were fine. No cavities! All in all we have had...SEVEN dental appointments in January and three more scheduled for early February. Sheesh.

Hanging out at the dentist... our home away from home. LOL.

In other news..more of Kameron is falling apart. While dealing with his tooth issues he also had knee issues. Kameron ruined his knees running track and XC. He ran all through elementary school, middle school, and through his sophomore year of HS. At the end of track season his sophomore year his knees were shot. They would swell and hurt and it was impossible for him to run. His pediatrician said that he needed to strengthen the muscles around his knees and had him do a bunch of PT exercises. Kameron did them for awhile but not as much as he should have. Without him running they seemed to get somewhat better. They would swell if he played sports or went on a hard hike but the swelling would go down and while somewhat painful they weren't too bad. He was reminded over and over again to do his exercises. Which he didn't do.

The first part of January, Kameron had a 3-day jazz band retreat. During the down time he and his friends played hours and hours of basketball and football. When Kameron got home he could barely walk and one of his knees was enormous. Bigger than a softball and he was in a lot of pain. His other knee was hurting too but nothing like the big swollen one. We got him into our GP right away and this doctor agreed with his old pediatrician that Kam has to build up the muscles around his knees. His knee caps are so loose it gives me the shivers just thinking about it. His patella floats around and isn't in the right groove so it rubs and becomes inflamed. Kam went in for x-rays on both knees. Luckily no serious damage had been done. He was diagnosed with patellofemoral pain syndrome PFPS and bursitis. The doctor referred him to a sports medicine physical therapist who will then determine if his knee needs to be drained. He still has yet to go... the PT was booked out until February. The swelling has gone down quite a bit but his knees still really hurt. Kameron was freaking out that something was going to be seriously wrong with his knees that would prevent him from serving a mission. Missionaries have to pass some pretty rigorous physical assessments. They have to be able to walk an average of 6 miles a day and ride a bike an average of 12 miles a day. So between his darn knees and his tooth issues Kameron was super stressed out.

Kam is showing his actual kneecap. See how huge his knee is?

But during all of this rigmarole I got to cram in a mother/son lunch date with Kam. My brother, Kirk, and I have been on a quest for years to find the best cubano sandwich ever since we watched the movie Chef one Christmas. Kam and I found the ultimate cubano right here in Spokane!

The same day that Kameron and I had our mother/son lunch date between his many doctor appointments...Tyler had a fun morning with Bryn at her elementary school for Donuts with Dads.

Is anyone on the celery juice kick? It is supposed to be really good for inflammation and is supposed to have all kinds of other health benefits. Kirk and Meki and their family are on the celery juice kick. We have tried all kinds of things to help with inflammation. Apple cider vinegar, turmeric, and on and on. The problem for Tyler is that as a Type 1 diabetic most of them absolutely plummet his blood sugar...dangerously fast. So he isn't able to do the anti-inflammatory things. We decided to give the fresh celery juice a try and yes, it also drops his blood sugar, but not nearly as fast as other things do. It's more of a gentler drop. That was exciting to find out so Tyler is all in!

Ailey and her dance team were coming in HOT this month. They had so many performances, competitions, and half-time shows. She was dancing all month long.

We have had fun watching her do her thing. But I don't think anything can top the fun we had watching her perform at Rubber Chicken which is the school spirit competition between our high school and our rival. The varsity girls play a basketball game and the cheerleaders from both schools do a competitive half-time show and then the varsity boys play their game and both dance teams do a big competitive half-time show. Each year there is a theme and all of the student body and crowd get involved with props and t-shirts and all kinds of things. At the end of all of that...judges decide which school had the most school spirit and they are awarded "Chuck" the rubber chicken to live at their school for the year. This is a big Spokane high school thing. All of the high schools have these spirit competitions with their rivals. It actually is really fun!

So imagine our delight when we found out that not only would we get to watch Ailey perform (like we did several years ago when Reilly was on the dance team) but that she was also going to BE Chuck the Chicken!! I LOVE IT SO MUCH! The smallest girl on the dance team has to wear the chicken outfit and do all of their dances in the chicken costume plus a bunch of other things to rev up the crowd. Reilly would've HATED being Chuck the Chicken but Ailey was excited!! Not only did she do an AMAZING job dancing as Chuck but SHE OWNED IT!! She loved every single minute of being center stage. Again Tyler and I just looked at each other like "Where did this kid come from?" She was the shyest kid ever and now she is rocking it at half-time like nobody's business. It was SUPER FUN to watch her!!

Dancing with the Silly Sacks...another weird school tradition.

Ailey in all her Chuck the Chicken/Baby Shark Glory!!

We sat up in a section with a bunch of friends from our stake and it was fun to cheer on all of our kids who were playing basketball, cheering, and dancing. It was a great night!

Kameron was hanging out with his cronies so we never really saw him. I do appreciate him being tagged on FB in photos! :)

My friend Rebecca and I were able to squeeze in one last marathon Starbucks meet up before she moved to Wisconsin.

Kam is super excited that he FINALLY gets to vote in an upcoming election!! That kid needs to major in political science!!

I updated all of our kids pictures on the piano a few weeks ago and came across this:

Different but still the same. I love it.
And...then I had a nice little cry about how quickly Kameron has grown up.

One Saturday most of our family drove down to Stacey's to watch our niece River play basketball. She did a great job and it was fun to watch and cheer for her.

River's team won all three of her games!

We watched our nephew Dane do his thing during time outs and half-time. :)

We all went out to eat at the best little restaurant in their town. So good!

We dropped the kids and John off at Stacey's house and Tyler, my mom, me, Stacey, and Kelley went to one of our favorite antiques stores and found some treasures.

These guys had some fun cousin time!!

Things with Primary have been CRAZY this month...with the new schedule, new curriculum, putting on a Temple and Priesthood Prep Night...and I got a new counselor and secretary. Whoa. We had 12 kids move up early to YM/YW as 11 year olds so the YM and YW ended up getting quite a few kids and those organizations needed to be restructured to accommodate that. I lost my first counselor to YW (my friend Caroline) but ended up replacing her with my good friend Annie. Yay! My secretary got called be the librarian and help out with Sunday School since that has also gotten a bunch more kids. So I got a new secretary (Jordyn...new in our ward) and I think she will be great! So it ended up working out okay. The bad part was that they started releasing people in between Christmas and New Years and not getting new people called until the 2nd week of January which made things insane. Especially since we were putting on the Temple and Priesthood Prep night for 12 kids and their parents with decorations, refreshments, and six speakers. My good friend (and 2nd counselor) Shannon and I did it all by ourselves. We had to hurry and squeeze it in fast too because there was a youth temple trip the first week of February and it needed to be done before that! I am glad that it is done!

I also hosted book club at my house this month. We read Girl Waits With Gun by Amy Stewart. I had already read it for Spokane is Reading. Everyone liked it. We had a bunch of people out of town so we had a smaller gathering this month but it all worked out and was a fun night with a great discussion.

Bryn had her 4th Grade Music Concert:

Reilly and Hunter came in a bit late and Bryn was so excited to point them out to her friend.

Not only did she sing but she also played the recorder. Sayonara recorder! Last kid...last recorder. You will not be missed.

Bryn and her friend Kaylee.

Bryn did a great job!

Tyler and I set some goals for the New Year for ourselves and our family and I am happy to say that we have made a good start on them already. I was talking to the missionaries from our ward and they are having some serious issues with new missionaries coming out that can't cook...like at all. They can't cook an egg or even make the most basic things. (There have been changes with feeding the missionaries so they are required to cook most meals for themselves rather than eat at members homes.) Kam is a pretty good cook but we are having him do some of the main cooking for our Sunday dinners as practice and he is doing a really spectacular job!! We also started our home study for Come Follow Me for Individuals and Families and I absolutely love it! We have had some great in depth discussions for our FHE. We always had FHE on Sunday nights anyway so it has been really easy to incorporate this program. Plus, we have older kids which makes it even easier. We all take turns planning the lesson and leading the discussion...even Bryn. The manual and online resources make it so easy. Tyler and I have also been staying really active despite the snow and ice. Being outside really helps with my January blahs. I have read a lot of books this month and have tried to *find* the coziness rather than feeling that cooped-up-cabin-fever-feeling.

I love this quote that I found on Instagram at the start of January. It really helped me set my intention for the month and gave me some great perspective:

Winter solstice time is no longer celebrated as it once was, with the understanding that this is a period of descent and rest, of going within our homes, within ourselves and taking in all that we have been through, all that has passed in this full year that is coming to a close. Like nature and the animal kingdom around us, this time of hibernation is so necessary to our tired limbs, our burdened minds.

Our modern culture teaches avoidance [of this rest] at a max at this time; [with] alcohol, lights, shopping, overworking, overspending, comfort food, and consumerism. And yet the natural tug to go inward as nearly all creatures are doing is strong and the weather so bitter that people are left feeling that winter is hard...it can be lonely and isolating. Whereas in actual fact winter is kind. She points us in her quiet, soft way towards our inner self, towards this annual time of peace and reflection.

Winter takes away the distractions, the buzz, and presents us with the perfect time to rest and withdraw into womb like love, bringing fire and light to our hearth. And then...just around the corner...like a seed planted deep in the earth, we will all rise with renewed energy once again to dance in the sunlight.

10 Things to Tell You: #1

10 Things: When Do You Read?

I follow Laura Tremaine on social media and listen to her Smartest Person in the Room podcast. She just started a new podcast called 10 Things to Tell You. (This is also a challenge that she has done before on Instagram.) Each week on her 10 Things podcast she asks a question or gives a prompt that she challenges her listeners to journal, share with a friend, or post on social media. I don't know that I will do all of her prompts but I want to do some of them. She asks interesting and introspective questions and I thought that they would be fun to share on my blog.

When Do You Read? How Do You Read? What Do You Read?

This seems like a good prompt to kick things off. I love to talk about reading. One of my great joys in life is talking books. I am definitely a girl who loves to be in a book club and I am currently in one that I really enjoy. One of my *dream* jobs would be to moderate book clubs and come up with discussion questions and lead the discussion. Does this job exist??? LOL.

When do I read?

Whenever I can. I love to read and I make time for it. I am always reading/listening to several books at a time. I am always reading a fiction book and I am always reading a nonfiction book. I pick up whichever one I am most in the mood to read that day. I am also ALWAYS listening to an audio book as well. Listening to audiobooks is a perfect activity for when I am working on Sisters Creed projects during the day, driving the  kids to and fro, and while I do things around the house. (I also listen to a lot of podcasts.) I always have a book on my kindle fire that I am reading and I also read my scriptures daily. So...I read a lot.

I read my scriptures or listen to them (I have an audio version) each morning and then we read scriptures as a family most nights.  I listen to audiobooks while I work at home and the kids are at school. I don't watch TV so after dinner and activities with the kids I will usually read for awhile before bed. I also have anxiety that I have to work hard to keep in in check and it really likes to rear its ugly head in the middle of the night. I don't have trouble falling asleep but I usually wake up at least once in the night and have trouble falling back asleep. That is where my kindle fire comes in handy. I always have a classic book loaded up on my kindle. When I can't go to sleep I am able to read in the dark until I do. I find that the classics are perfect for this nocturnal reading. The stories are interesting enough that I want to read them but not so gripping that they keep my attention all night. I will usually read for about 10-15 minutes before I fall back to sleep.

How do you read?

Also any way that I can! I, of course, love a physical book. That would be my number one choice. My favorite places in the world are book stores with cozy upholstered chairs to sink into and read or flip through a book with a hot chocolate in hand. I also absolutely adore old books. I love their look, feel, smell, and the stories they tell. I have collected many for my own personal collection... both favorite authors and titles, classics, and childrens books. I also always have old books for sale in my booth and people love them and snap them up. Some of my favorite conversations at vintage shows are when someone has found a beloved book in my booth.

I listen to audiobooks. I started to listen to audiobooks right after Kameron was born. I was a stay at home mom with a baby and a preschooler. Tyler was working two jobs at the time so he would leave early in the morning and come home late at night. Those days were so LONG when it was just me and little tiny kids. Once I found audiobooks...these were in tape or CD form that I would check out from the library...I became addicted and started listening to books while I cooked, cleaned, and took care of my kids. I love that physically reading a book and listening to an audiobook stimulate the exact same areas of the brain. Audiobooks are so great because it allows me to multitask! I love it! Tyler and I also often listen to audiobooks while we travel. One of my Christmas gifts from Tyler this year was a subscription to Audible. It may be my very favorite gift so far!! It has definitely already been put to good use!

When Kindles came out I was very dismissive. I wanted to hold a book in my hand. I thought they were lame with their black and white electronic dreariness. But then the Kindle Fire came out and I asked for one for my birthday maybe five or six years ago and I was converted. They are awesome and so convenient!! So many books on one little device! Plus, I love that you can read with them at night! No stupid clip on book lights. No reading with a headlamp like I used to do! LOL. I prefer my background to be dark and my text to be white. This cuts down on any eye strain or glow in a darkened bedroom. It is perfect for my insomnia reads. I also always take my kindle when traveling. I love it so much! I still marvel at the convenience of instantaneously being able to download the next book that I want. It's like magic to me!! Especially when I am reading a series and I want to move on to the next book RIGHT NOW!

What do you read?

Everything! My favorite genre by far is historical fiction. I ADORE historical fiction and always have since I was a little girl. I also really enjoy biographies and memoirs. That would be my second favorite genre. Third, contemporary fiction. Fourth, nonfiction. I am not a big fantasy or mystery reader. I don't like gritty crime novels. But I will read them sometimes and have even really enjoyed several of them. That is why I particularly love a book club. It forces me to read things outside of my favorite genres. My book club has picked a lot of fantasy, mystery, and YA. So many times I have been very pleasantly surprised. The Night Circus, To All the Boys I've Loved Before, The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie, Rainbow Rowell books, and Tana French novels come to mind.

Tyler is also a great resource. We try to read several of the same books each year. We started this traditon when we first got married. We started off with the goal of reading one mutual book per year. Now we both read many of the same books. It is so fun to be out on a date night or on a trip and passionately discuss books. We are both very opinionated!!  I am so glad that he is a reader and loves book stores and author events as much as I do. He has recommended some of my favorite fantasy and sci-fi books...books I would never have picked up on my own. He had me read George R.R. Martin's Game of Thrones series years and years ago. Way before the TV show came out and I loved his books! He also got me hooked on Ernest Cline. Ready Player One is another all-time favorite book. He had me read The Martian which I also loved and many others.

Spokane Is Reading...the yearly book selection made by my town...has been a great resource. I never would have read ANY of the book selections on my own and I have loved them all. I've also mentioned that I love podcasts and subscribe to several book related ones and have gotten many great book suggestions there. I love Bookstagram (book related Instagram) I get so many good suggestions there as well. I am also involved in several FB book groups. Reading just adds such richness and joy to my life!! I can't imagine my life without it!! This year the kids gave me a t-shirt for Christmas that says: Bookish. I love it so much!

Some of my favorite authors are:

Pat Conroy
Diana Gabledon
George R.R. Martin
Jane Austen
The Brontes
Ray Bradbury
Ernest Cline
John Jakes
JK Rowling

Some of my favorite books are:

Prince of Tides and all Pat Conroy books
Outlander and the Outlander series
Harry Potter and the Harry Potter series
The Outsiders
The Thorn Birds by Colleen McCullough
North and South series by John Jakes
Game of Thrones Series
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Bronte
Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry
For the Love by Jen Hatmaker

These authors and book titles are just a few of my MANY favorites! Reading is so important to me and I can't imagine a day in my life without books in some form or another. People always ask me when I have time to read and I think that we always have the time to do the things that are a priority to us and reading is a priority to me.  I am always able to squeeze it in even if it is just a little bit each day. Plus, like I said before, I very rarely watch TV. I would much rather be reading! ;)

52 Week Challenge: Question 16

What foods do you like? What foods do you dislike? Do you have any food or medical allergies?

I haven't done one of these 52 week challenges in forever! It's time for another one.

As far as food goes...I would say that I am an adventurous eater. There is nothing that I won't try once. I grew up eating out at diverse restaurants a lot and at a young age I loved things like sushi and escargot. They are still two of my very favorite foods. My brother Kirk and I are probably the most adventurous eaters in our extended family. We are looking forward to our trip to San Francisco and we are already planning what we will eat. Kirk has a list of all kinds of weird dishes and places for us to hit. Can't wait.

Tyler grew up eating a fairly conservative diet. Very meat and potatoes. Very Utah Mormon food. (Yes, that is a thing.) When we started dating he didn't eat seafood or sushi or even mustard. (What?!) But he has since developed a much more sophisticated palate and there isn't anything he won't try. Now he is often the one pushing me to try weird foods. I love it!

Out of our four kids...Kameron is our most adventurous eater with Bryn right behind him. When we were in Portland they wanted to eat jelly fish and rabbit and all kinds of things that were on the "wild side" of the menu at the Chinese restaurant that we went to. That fills me with great joy! Ailey is our least experimental eater. She likes about four things and that is it. She is the pickiest of picky eaters. Reilly is fairly picky too. For Reilly it is no seafood, no sushi, no mushrooms, no onions. Good grief. Tyler and I never cater to our picky eaters. Reilly is a bit easier because she will just work around her dislikes. She will eat cucumber rolls and things like that when we go out for sushi... which is a lot... and she just quietly deals with her dislikes but Ailey throws a huge fit. Trying to get that kid to eat as a toddler was one of my greatest tests of patience as a parent!! It still is. Sometimes when we go out for dinner she just orders white rice or buttered noodles. Seriously. Where did this kid come from?!

It is hard to say what my favorite foods are because I like so many things! I would say that sushi, seafood, Thai food, Japanese food, and Korean food are at the top of my list!!

There are however certain foods that I dislike:

1.) Fast Food

I cannot think of one fast food place that I like or can even order something from. Gross.

2.) Mayonnaise

This is hated across the board by me and my siblings. Too many school lunch bologna sandwiches with clear mayonnaise. There were no lunch box ice packs back in our day. It's amazing that we didn't all get salmonella.

3.) Milk

Also universally despised by all of the McClellan kids. One day on St. Patrick's Day our mom turned our milk green with food coloring to be festive. The milk must have been going south before that since I *hear* that food coloring won't sour milk (allegedly) but that was all it took. Some green sour milk and now none of us can drink it. *Shivers*

4.) Pears

I hate the gritty texture of pears. My mom also used to make a very disgusting side dish for our dinners back in the 80s which was half a pear, a blob of mayo on top of it, and sprinkled with cheddar cheese. This was beloved by none of us. My Grandma Ellersick used to take a wedge of iceberg lettuce and put a blob of mayo on top of that and call it *salad*. Also not beloved by the McClellan kids... I feel sick just typing that.

5.) Raisins

I used to like them as a kid. I have memories of being little and eating them out of the little red boxes and enjoying them. Perhaps I enjoyed them too much? Now I cannot eat even one. So gross. Do NOT even THINK about putting those in a cookie at our house!!

6.) Apple Sauce

Same reason as Pears. Gritty texture. I like apples...just not in a sauce or in a pie. Because apple pie is just basically applesauce pie.

7.) Melon

I hate all melon. Every.single.one. But cantaloupe is literally the worst food known to man.

8.) Cucumbers

Nope. Disgusting. This is literally the only thing that I have to pick out of food. I can get down most things that I am served but cucumbers are a NO. Although I do like tzakiki sauce a lot. I make it quite often but I always very very finely shred the cucumbers.

9.) Pizza

This is the greatest sorrow of my children's lives. I think we have had the pizza delivery guy come maybe 5 times in their entire lives. Believe me...they let me know how sad this is for them all.the.time. Whenever I go out of town it is pizza for days at our house.

10.) Marinara Sauce

See above. It makes me not enjoy other things like lasagna and certain pastas and of course pizza.

When I think back to the meals that my mom made growing up...

My very favorite meal was my mom's finger steaks dipped in homemade ranch dressing (add bottled ranch dressing to my list of inedible foods) with homemade mashed potatoes (no potato buds...gross). This was only made on special occasions...like birthdays... and was one of my Grandma Ellersick's better recipes. I still request that Tyler make this for me on my birthday and I wash it all down with my Grandma's green punch too. Delicious!!

Other meals that my mom made that I loved growing up:

Tacos
Taco Salad
Enchilada Casserole (Tyler requests this every year as his birthday dinner.)
Meatloaf
Homemade Clam Chowder (My mom's recipe is the best!)
Fried Rice (My Aunt Margaret's recipe)
Homemade Chicken Noodle Soup (My Grandma Ellersick's recipe)
Stroganoff
Pot Roast
Chili
Steak Soup

If I came home and saw that we were having any of the above for dinner I was STOKED!

BUT... if I came home and saw that we were having any of the foods listed below... I would invite myself over to a friend's house for dinner.

My Mom's worst meals:

1.) Salmon Loaf

This is BY FAR the most loathed meal in my house growing up. Liked by NO ONE but my mother. This gem was also a recipe from my Grandma Ellersick and it is straight up the most disgusting thing you will ever eat.

Let me paint you a picture... you open up a can of...yes CAN of pink salmon. It looks like cat food. You mix it with things like celery and crushed up saltines. You mush it into a loaf pan and bake it. Then you slice it and cover it in the most vile sauce of made of milk and boiled eggs. You might as well just vomit now. It is HORRID!!

Right behind Salmon Loaf was....

2.) Liver and Onions

Enough said!

Tyler's favorite meals growing up were:

1.) His Mom's Roast Chicken Sunday Dinner (or Pot Roast)

This was what they had almost every Sunday after church: Roast chicken or beef with potatoes and veggies and homemade rolls and Crystal Light to drink. Tyler still loves himself some Crystal Light! He drinks it every day at work.

2.) Canned Fruit and Peanut Butter Toast

This is a meal that he speaks of with such joy and love. Just ask our kids!! LOL. Whenever it was a busy night and his mom didn't have time to cook dinner; (His dad never cooked...can you imagine???) she would have everyone in the family go into their food storage and pick out whatever homemade jar of canned fruit they wanted to eat...no sharing with anyone else...everyone got their own jar. (Tyler always picked cherries or pears.) This was then accompanied by peanut butter toast. He mentions this meal all.the.time. I told him to learn to can fruit! I am sure that his mother would be SHOCKED by how fondly her *quick* meal is remembered.

3.) Lasagna

Tyler makes this for himself because ...see above...I don't like marinara sauce. I will make him a delicious butternut squash lasagna with a basil cream sauce which he likes but sometimes he just wants his mom's lasagna made with cottage cheese. :)

 4.) Lefse

This was a Norwegian flat bread made from potatoes that Tyler's family would make at Christmas time. It is delicious. Not all lefse is alike. Tyler makes a darn good lefse!

5.) Ground Beef Stuffed Crescent Rolls

Ground beef, Lipton Onion Soup Mix, and cheddar cheese were all combined and baked inside a crescent roll. Tyler's eyes still light up at the mention of this!

6.) Friday Night Pizza and Pop

On Friday nights when Tyler was a kid... his family had the tradition of going to Sounds Easy Pizza in Orem, UT every Friday night and getting a bunch of pizzas and then heading over to the Gas N' Go to fill up their refillable giant mugs with pop. He married the WRONG person. Poor guy.

Foods that Tyler hates:

1.) Oysters

2.) Sardines

3.) Salmon

4.) Liver

5.) Pigs Feet (He had to eat these on his mission in North Carolina.)

If you ask my kids...and I did...what their favorite meals are they include:

Broccoli Divan (This is our typical Sunday Dinner)
Pecan Patties with Mashed Potatoes
Street Tacos
Pad Thai
Stroganoff
Hawaiian Haystacks
Salad Bar
Taco Salad
Granny's Homemade Chicken Noodle Soup
Pasta Alfresca
The Dieter's Plate

The Dieter's Plate was a creation out of desperation one night and totally helps satiate Tyler's cravings for his canned fruit and peanut butter toast. One night we had literally no groceries and no time to go to the store. I rummaged in the fridge and pulled out random items. A little bit of leftover cottage cheese, some olives, carrot sticks, crackers, canned fruit (not homemade), a couple of boiled eggs, some pickles, and some cheese that I sliced. I made everyone plates with cottage cheese in the middle and all of the other stuff radiating out from it. I called it the dieter's plate because it looked just like the meals my Grandma McKinnon used to order at restaurants in the 80s because she was always on a diet. MY FAMILY LOVED IT!! They ask for it all the time!! Ha ha!

As far as food allergies go...we don't have any life threatening ones. Thank goodness. Tyler is allergic to pistachios which is terrible because he loves them and Reilly is allergic to kiwi.

I could do multiple posts on food and family. Maybe I will. It is a much more interesting topic (to me) than some of the other topics on this challenge!! :)

2018 :Year in Review

2018 Year in Review

Best of Nine
2018 was a MUCH BETTER year than 2017 which sucked the old wazoo and for that I am EXTREMELY grateful!! We had more happy times, better health, and more travel. So much was better...but not without challenges...we still had many of those. All in all, I will call 2018 a good year!

Here are our highlights and lowlights for 2018:

-The year started off with me being called as Primary President. I had no idea how I was going to feel about this calling but so far so good. In fact, dare I say it?  I really enjoy it.

-Ailey loved being a drill team captain on her middle school drill team and she did such a great job choreographing dances and working with the girls.

-The prophet and president of our church passed away. President Monson was a wonderful man and a great inspiration to me.

-Reilly lived in Cheney, WA for most of the year and made plans to attend Eastern WA University to study Nursing. She changed her mind and moved to the valley and became an office manager for a coffee distribution company and decided that business was more her passion.

-Perimenopause started to really kick in for me. Not a fan!!

-Tyler turned 47 which we were THRILLED about!!

-Ailey registered for high school. That is always so surreal. Even with kid #3.

-Ailey was an honors student and had her picture up on the wall at her middle school.

-Bryn participated in the Science Fair and earned two ribbons!

-Kameron traveled a ton with his various band and jazz band competitions.

-I got hair extensions. Stress took an immense toll on me in 2017 and as a result I lost a ton of hair. Scary amounts. Getting hair extensions was the best thing and the most expensive thing that I have ever done. I am glad I did it. Although I would never recommend them to any one who just wanted longer hair. They are a high maintenance pain but a pain that I am willing to bear and I am grateful for them!

-Stacey, Kelley, and I flew to Las Vegas to reconnect with our father. It had been 17 years since we last saw him. It was a very good trip and extremely meaningful and healing. I am glad that we made the effort to go. Our relationships with him have grown by leaps and bounds. It has been a blessing in our lives.

-I was also able to visit with my BFF from college, Tiffany, while in Las Vegas and that was a pure joy! It was one of the highlights of my year! Can't wait to do it again.

-Tyler and I were able to sneak away for a romantic getaway in February. It was wonderful!!

-Reilly started dating Hunter and they have been serious ever since.

-Tyler did the Ancestry DNA test and we found out that...SHOCKER...he is Norwegian. LOL.

-Stacey and I were vendors together at the Rebel Junk Vintage Market in Coeur d'Alene, ID.

-Ailey participated in her first Road Show.

-Tyler and I took a trip to the Oregon Coast. It was fabulous until I got lost and almost died on the beach. Remember that? Ha ha!!

-Bryn turned 9!!

-Bryn ran track for the first time this year and KILLED it!!

-Ailey tried out for the high school dance team and MADE IT!! We were so excited and happy for her!!

-President Russell M. Nelson became our new prophet and President of the Church. I love him SO MUCH!! His presidency has been an exciting roller coaster ride of amazing changes!! I loved President Monson dearly but President Nelson has definitely breathed new life and vitality into the church. It is so exciting to be a part of it all!!

-Tyler was released as the secretary of the High Priests Quorum as it doesn't really exist any more and promptly got called to be a primary teacher by yours truly! He is a great primary teacher!!

-We became a hammocking family. We LOVE our hammocks.

-Kam went on a school trip to Portland and had a great time!

-Tyler and I celebrated 23 years of marriage and were so HAPPY about that!!

-Bryn sang a solo at her school's Spring concert and did an amazing job!

-Ailey marched in the Junior Lilac Parade.

-My mom, Stacey, and I were all vendors at the Farm Chicks show this year. It was fantastic as usual!! I love it.

-Kameron marched in the Lilac Parade.

-I turned 46!!

-Ailey turned 14!!

-Both Ailey and Kameron made honor roll second semester of their 8th grade and 11th grade years!!

-Ailey graduated from middle school.

-My sister Jordin moved here from Kansas City!! We are SO HAPPY to have Jordin, Ramon, and the kids here permanently!!

-Kameron started working a second job. He is a hard worker!!

-Ailey attended youth conference.

-Ailey attended her 3rd year of Girls Camp and... again...LOVED IT!

-Meki and the kids came for a fun two week visit! Kirk and Meki and the kids ended up visiting about 4 times this year which was AWESOME!

-Tyler's sister, Lori, came to visit for nine days and we had the BEST time with her!!

-We did a bunch of hiking, biking, paddleboarding, kayaking, boating and swimming! Loved it.

-The Pacific Northwest burned again and the air quality was the worst that I have EVER seen it.

-We had a fun trip to Silverwood with Lori!

-Kameron started his SENIOR year! Say it ain't so... :(

-Ailey started her FRESHMAN year!

-Bryn started 4th grade and got Ms. T. who Ailey had in 4th grade too! We were happy about that!

-I didn't have to drive to early morning Seminary for the 2nd year in a row! Kam and Ailey go together. Are the angels singing???

-Bryn started her 3rd year of piano.

-One of Kam's best friends got his mission call and left on his mission to New Zealand. Mission prep for Kam has begun and is going full force.

-Stacey and I participated in the Funky Junk Show in Sandpoint, Idaho!

-Paul and Whitney and the girls came for a visit! So fun!

-BRYN CAME IN FIRST AT HER XC MEET!! First time ever!!

-Bryn qualified for the XC All-City Finals! She did great!

-Tyler and I redid our bedroom and we absolutely LOVE IT!

-I survived my first Primary Program as the Primary President!

-Kameron got his Senior Pictures taken and they are great!

-We had a memorable luncheon out at the lake for a bunch of our friends in the vintage industry. It was really fun!

-The one year mark since Tyler's brain hemorrhage came and went and we were filled with gratitude for his life and health. I'm not going to lie though. I still have PTSD and anxiety from it all.

-Reilly turned 22!

-We had one of our most difficult years with Reilly and she would agree. Parenting kids in their 20s is no joke. It is hard and there have been a lot of bumps in the road. Too many arguments, power struggles, and tears. It isn't just the letting go part...even though that is hard...it is standing by and watching from the sidelines as she made decisions that we knew would have repercussions...good and bad. One friend of mine summed it up well with these words:

"You know how people always say cherish these years they go so fast. Clearly that doesn't apply to watching your kids do their 20s".

I have to 100% agree with that and with another friend who said:

"I think the hideousness that is parenting adult children is the best kept secret about having kids. NO ONE WARNS YOU! Why? Blindsided I tell you. I assumed once you got them through high school you high five, heave a sigh of relief, and launch them out the door into the great big world to do magical incredible things and bring honor to your family. #wrong"

I love that!!  It has been a rough road this year but progress has been made and we still love each other and hang out together so I count that as a win.

**Here is one of my favorite quotes from my Grandma Ellersick. It is a gem and gave me some perspective years ago when I was complaining about how hard it was to parent teenagers. She said "Kristin, you should try parenting a 65 year old!! Now THAT is ROUGH!!"**

-Kameron turned 18!

-Kam registered for the draft.

-Kameron participated in many fantastic concerts and events!

-Kameron was asked to participate in the 2018 Festival of the Arts. It was quite an honor. So cool!

-Our family spent Thanksgiving in Portland with Paul and Whitney and had such a GREAT TIME!!

-We decided that we want to get a dog. The *when* in still up in the air. Tyler and I need to let this decision sit for a bit. The girls want to get one when Kameron leaves for his mission and name the dog Elder Johnson. They think we won't miss the *other* Elder Johnson so much. Ha ha! We will see. Of course, Kam votes for getting the dog before he leaves!

-I saw some cousins that I hadn't seen in about a year and a half and it was so nice.

-I participated in Pickin Christmas Vintage Market in Post Falls, Idaho for the 2nd year and I loved it!

-Some decisions were made about Sisters Creed that will have big changes for the business in 2019.

-Ailey's drill team qualified for STATE!

-We participated in Light the World for the 3rd year. I love it so much!

-My mom turned 70 and planned a trip to San Francisco with her 5 kids.

-Kameron has a new girlfriend although he doesn't like us calling her that even though she is. We humor him by calling Abby his "lady friend" instead. Ha ha! He tolerates it.

-Reilly moved into her own apartment.

-Some of my favorite new changes about Church were made...no more sharing time...AND...best of all...TWO HOUR CHURCH!! Yep, those angels are DEFINITELY singing!!

-Tyler's sister, Lori, decided to move to Utah and we are SUPER happy about it!

-I've lost 35 lbs and feel so much better. I have another 5 lbs to go to reach my goal weight. It is crazy how sometimes when you do something good for yourself that it becomes a trigger for someone else in a negative way. I don't think I've felt more of a backlash than I have by eating clean, losing weight, being active, healing my gut (I hate that phrase) but it is so true and it needed healing... and generally making some positive changes. People are weird that way. They act like your decision to live your life in a certain way is a direct INSULT to how they are living theirs...and they become really negative, defensive, and argumentative. (You can swap religion/politics for healthy eating and the results are also the same) Triggers are interesting. We need to pay more attention to them.

-I found out that a family member is going through some very hard things right now and it hurts my heart.

-We had a MUCH NEEDED and long put off family discussion with my extended family. So glad that happened.

-Tyler's boss FINALLY retired and Tyler is THRILLED! He has a new boss that he thinks is great and it has been a welcome change in his department!

-This year we were PLAGUED by dental issues at the end of the year... by we I mean Kam... and it seems to be carrying on into 2019. Delightful.

-We rang in 2019 with people we love!

I read 41 books in 2018. Here are my top five favorites:

1.) To All the Boys I've Loved Before by Jenny Han

2.) Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman

3.) A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness

4.) The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

5.) Girl, Wash Your Face by Rachel Hollis

The Worst Book of 2018:

The Identicals by Elin Hilderbrand

I absolutely despised this book and don't know how Elin Hilderbrand is a best-selling author with a huge devoted following.

Book Stats (Because I love these!)

Fiction: 27
Nonfiction: 14
Classics: 8
Book Club: 9 (The other 3 for the year I had already read.)

Goals Review:

It's one of my favorite times of the year for my little upholder self. Thanks Gretchen Rubin and The Four Tendencies for helping me to understand my eccentricities better and to embrace them! If you still haven't read that book you REALLY need to. In 2018 I set 202 goals for myself that included family goals, couple goals, and business goals. I should probably clarify that some were big goals, some were medium-sized goals, and some were little baby step goals.  I accomplished 136 out of 202. I accomplished 67% of the goals that I set in 2018 and I feel great about that! Progress is being made on most of the others...slow but steady...and some I will need to focus on hard core in 2019. But progress is progress!!

Health was a big goal for 2018 probably not a surprise after our 2017. That was one of our most productive areas. Another one was travel. I went on three trips in 2018 and that was awesome. My goal going forward is for Tyler and I to travel quarterly. I accomplished most of the things that I wanted to with my business for 2018 and I am moving forward on other business goals already. Another area that I felt was quite productive had to do with family relationships. I am very happy about that! Goals that Tyler and I set concerning our kids was another area that we worked really hard on ... intentional parenting, one-on-one time with our kids, working through some issues with Reilly, making the gospel a bigger part of each day: with personal and family prayer, personal and family scripture study, ministering, FHE. Things like that were a big priority in our family this last year. I felt like we had improved and grown by leaps and bounds in that area. It was funny in talking with the kids though; they requested even more dedication and felt there was still room for improvement. That was a wonderful surprise. Marriage goals was also an area that Tyler and I were successful in. I am happy that the areas that we had the most success in were the areas that mattered the most. Some of the more frivolous things fell by the wayside and that is okay because they can be rolled over into goals for 2019. I've been rolling over some goals for the past 10 years. To everything there is a season, right?

It is a really HUGE blessing to come to the end of a year and to be able to think, "That was a good year. Not a perfect year...but a good year." I am grateful for that! We have had our ups and downs this year. We have had our struggles. We have had times of joy and times of sorrow. We have cheered and laughed and we have worried and cried. We have yelled and screamed and been angry with one another. We have had some successes and some failures. We have had great happiness and great disappointments. All in all, 2018 was a most welcome and good year and it was not taken for granted that it was!

December: Things I am Loving

December: Things I am Loving

1.) Flowers in December

During the hustle and bustle and stress of December I really appreciated these flowers. When Tyler came home with them I was like, "Why are you spending money on flowers right now?! We have so many gifts to buy!" and he replied with, "Because I love you and I wanted you to have them." I think those flowers were my favorite gift that I received in December simply because they were given to me out of love and appreciation during the busiest and most stressful season. Those flowers meant the world to me and every time I saw them they made me smile.

2.) Mrs. Meyers Peppermint Cleaning Spray

Mrs. Meyers Peppermint Cleaning Spray added to my whole Christmas experience. I LOVE the smell of peppermint; especially around the holidays. I love peppermint candles and peppermint Scentsy melts. Spritzing this delicious smelling spray on my counter tops and tables was delightful AND even better...my kids liked to clean with it. Win-win!!

3.) Sweet's Orange Sticks

Sweet's Orange Sticks are the quintessential candy of Christmas for me. They remind me of my Grandma and Grandpa McKinnon. They always gave us these sticks with our Christmas presents every year. You never knew if you were going to get a box of the raspberry sticks (not a fan) or the orange sticks (big fan). Sweet's is a Utah company and these orange sticks are not always easy to find here in Spokane. The Trader Joe's variety is delicious and works in a pinch. But I specifically like these. This was part of my Christmas gift from Kameron and Tyler told me that Kam hunted high and low and went to multiple stores to find these for me. Love that kid! I was so excited to open them on Christmas morning!! I thoroughly enjoyed snacking on them while reading over Christmas Break!!

4.) Walkers Scottish Shortbread

Another favorite December treat! Scottish shortbread is a favorite for this Scottish girl and my whole family.

5.) A Very Special Christmas

I am a very traditional Christmas music person. We play Bing Crosby, Perry Como, Andy Williams, Mannheim Steamroller, and MOTAB around here with Sting, Annie Lennox, and Alison Moyet thrown into the mix. But look what was resurrected from the 80s this year...A Very Special Christmas circa 1987. This was the very first Christmas compilation that I ever purchased and it was on tape. I loved it and played the heck out of it. Then I got so sick of it that I hadn't played any music from it for over 25 years. Who knew that Christmas in Hollis by Run DMC would be our most played Christmas song of 2018. But it was and that brought this album back to my Christmas playlist. Enjoyable.
