By this time things were starting to get harder. The reality of how long this quarantine could last really set in.
Day 25: 4-7-20 (Tuesday)
So this is our new reality. Today was the first day that I had to go out in public after the new guidelines about wearing masks and gloves. I had to go to Albertsons. Grocery pick up is now 2 1/2 weeks out. I couldn't wait that long for a couple of things so I gloved and masked up and went in. What kind of world are we living in? It is so weird. So many precautions and new ways of doing things. I tried to explain it all to Tyler. He hasn't been in any stores for 25 days. I am grateful for all of the precautions but they still make me sad.
Grocery store update: Still no toilet paper or any kind of paper products. No flour. No yeast. No rice. No pasta. Very little canned soup... and weirdly no yogurt. What's with the yogurt hoarding? That was new. But I was happy to see sugar on the shelves. Plenty of meat and bread. There were a ton of canned beans. Ramen has returned. There were multiple shelves of canned chili. I also found bacon for the first time. Progress.
It was sunny today and in the 60s. Tyler and I did our walk in the afternoon. It felt good to be outside. I am loving my shirt from my friend Celeste. She owns Chaps; one of my very favorite restaurants in Spokane. She started this fundraiser to help support local restaurants and the restaurant industry.
Our new security camera arrived today. Tyler and Kameron installed it. It is AWESOME! We love it! We are going to buy another one for our back door. I hope that we never need it but it feels so good to get some of the projects done that we have talked about for YEARS.
Tyler took over the guitar today. He can actually play a bit. It was fun to listen to him. Kameron hasn't made much progress. He spends most of his evenings parked in his car side by side next to his girlfriend parked in her car as they talk for HOURS. It has been beneficial for all of us. LOL. Plus they are having some really great conversations about life, philosophy, religion, education... you name it. We fully support this.
We did a second walk again tonight. I love a good night walk. The whole family went for a walk to get a good look at the Pink Super Moon. It was really pretty. Also Trugreen came and did a lawn treatment and as Beverly hasn't been able to play outside much in the last 24 hours... she definitely needed some exercise. We all came home much more relaxed. Tyler and I have been getting on each others nerves today so it was good to walk some of that off.
Day 26: 4-8-20 (Wednesday)
The weather is so nice. We walked early this morning. It was fantastic! In fact Bryn put up her hammock in the yard and did *outside* school. We did a bunch of yard work today. I cleaned out all of the front flower beds. I had Tyler hack back some Oregon Grape that I loathe. It is starting to take over my peony plants.
Since it is Spring Break... Bryn didn't have virtual piano lessons today. Ailey had a Young Womens activity. They did Conference Trivia. We FaceTimed with Reilly and Hunter. We were talking about things that were catching our interest this week. Several of the guys at Reilly's work told her about a new conspiracy theory and in times of stress you know that I do love a good conspiracy theory! They are great entertainment! I got sucked down the rabbit hole of the whole Q conspiracy theory. It was a great distraction!! It made for a fun night's reading! LOL.
Day 27: 4-9-20 (Thursday)
Bryn's birthday is tomorrow! Our family is participating in the 2nd Worldwide Fast which will be on Good Friday. We are looking forward to it but it makes for a rather bummer birthday for an 11 year old. So we decided to do some of her birthday activities today.
We all got up this morning at 6 AM...YES...6 AM to do a donut run at our favorite donut place up north which is about 20 minutes from our house. They have a drive up window and the world's coldest and most delicious chocolate milk. They make something called a "Gigi". It is a donut stuffed with scrambled eggs, country gravy, cheese and you can get one that also has bacon. My family LOVES these. I think they are gruesome but live your best life. I was there for the chocolate milk and a maple bar. They make REALLY good maple bars. We went through the drive thru and were all protective geared up.
Bryn enjoying her Gigi!
It was felt extremely exciting and... not going to lie... a little dangerous to do a donut run! We were prepared with Chlorox wipes and wiped literally everything down...donut box, drinks...everything. We were safe and we loved having a little *adventure*!
Look what the sweet donut guy included in our box! Bryn loved it!
Today we decided to blow off our deck. We cleaned and dragged out our patio furniture. The weather is so nice...mid 60s...so we want to be able to be outside enjoying it. Both girls now have their hammocks up in the yard. Tyler and I went for our walk around lunch time.
We put together an Easter Basket/Care Package for Reilly and Hunter. Reilly came over after work for a porch visit and we were able to give it to her then. We have a huge deck so she was able to visit with us from one side of the deck while we were safely on the other side. It was good to hang out with her and catch up. A visit with Reilly always does us a lot of good!
We also enjoyed some fruity beverages out on the deck while visiting. It was delightful!!
It was REALLY NICE to be outside!!
Later that night Bryn had an early birthday song and her birthday donut before we opened our fast. Today was a really fun day! Tomorrow is Bryn's actual 11th birthday and the Worldwide Good Friday Fast. Exciting!!
I also got the news that Farm Chicks has been postponed. That had to happen and I am so glad that it did. There was no way that this event could have happened the first weekend in June.
Day 28: 4-10-20 (Friday: Bryn's Birthday)
TODAY IS BRYN'S 11TH BIRTHDAY!!
I literally cannot believe that our baby girl is already 11! She is officially a TWEEN!! We tried to celebrate her the very best that we could...including a stay out at the lake!
We opened our fast for the 2nd Worldwide Good Friday Fast last night after dinner. Today we continued fasting until dinner at 6 pm. It was a very special experience. I was part of the Worldwide Good Friday Fast FB page and I cannot even tell you how uplifting it was! So many people of all different faiths from all over the world fasting and praying together and loving and supporting one another. It was such a beautiful experience! Kameron was fasting and following along via Twitter. We kept sharing experiences and posts. It was so powerful. The unity that was felt will never be forgotten.
Bryn had online school today and her class sang happy birthday to her while her friend Andrew played the ukulele. How many ukulele experts are there going to be when quarantine is over?? LOL. Bryn got many birthday calls and texts which she absolutely loved. Several of her birthday Amazon packages arrived before we headed out to the lake too.
This Adidas track suit for Beverly was one of Bryn's birthday gifts. It is EVERYTHING! She doesn't seem to mind wearing it and it is hilarious watching her run around in it. Bryn got herself some Adidas sweats too!
Tyler worked a half day and then we packed up and headed out to the lake. It was so gorgeous out there. The kids and Beverly played outside. We soaked up the sunshine and the water. It felt good to relax and decompress.
Bryn requested a special birthday dinner and a family movie night as her quarantine birthday activity. Just being somewhere other than our house felt like a treat!
Bryn requested: cheese pizza, salad bar, tempura shrimp, and Martinellis to drink. For dessert she wanted strawberry cheese cake. All I could find at the stores to fulfill that wish was a Jello No Bake cheesecake kit. I haven't had one of those since college and probably won't buy another one... but she liked it. :)
Reilly and Hunter came out to the lake to say Happy Birthday to Brynnie. They were able to visit with us for quite awhile out in the yard on lawn chairs while we were all up on the deck. For dinner though they had to eat on the deck while we ate inside but we all chatted via FaceTime. Not too awful...they did have a GORGEOUS lakeside view!
Talking during dinner on FaceTime.
Social Distancing Birthday Dinner Guests.
Zoomed in.
It meant so much to Bryn to have Reilly and Hunter at her birthday dinner in whatever capacity that they could be. It was fun to see them and have them there. The weather cooperated which was wonderful! The deck at the lake was big enough for all of us to be on separate sides while we sang Happy Birthday to Bryn and she blew out her birthday candles on her cheesecake.
After Reilly and Hunter left we had a family movie night. Bryn wanted to watch the movie
Onward on Disney + so we all snuggled up and watched the show. It was pretty cute.
Beverly is a real fan of movie nights at the lake and her favorite pillow.
She was snoring away!
Day 29: 4-11-20 (Saturday)
Today sucked despite being out at the lake. It was rainy and gray. We did a bunch of work. We had to pull in the dock that was floating too far out. We did yard work. My siblings and I are in the process of dividing up my mom's belongings and it is awful...for many reasons. Walking into the lake house yesterday and seeing names on things was pretty devastating.
Add the fact that we can't all agree or for that matter get along makes it ten times worse. There is a definite family division right now. Having Kirk in SLC makes it hard and now with COVID-19 everything is extremely complicated. Also probate which should have ended the first week of April is on hold until the courts open again. There is so much to do and it is all overwhelming and depressing.
Word to the wise...never have a family property left to be "shared". The very best thing that my grandparents could have done...although sad...would have been to instruct that the property be sold (to someone outside the family) and the proceeds divided 5 ways upon their death. That didn't happen and family relationships were destroyed. Then my mom purchased the lake house...big mistake...which she agreed was a mistake the last time I saw her. She literally said to me, "Kristin, if I would have known what it was going to cost me...financially and emotionally...I never would have bought the lake house." I told her that I understood. She was under so much strain because of it. Then she passed away one week later and left us in the same mess. Tyler and I have already agreed that upon our deaths any properties are to be sold outside the family and the money split between our four kids. The unnecessary guilt and obligation of trying to hold onto family properties is just too much.
Day 30: 4-12-20 (Easter Sunday)
Today is Easter and it is beautiful! I have always loved Easter and this year it means even more to me. The miracle of the resurrection, the promise of eternal life and eternal families, the triumph over death and the celebration of the risen Lord. It is glorious! I am so grateful for this knowledge.
We watched/listened to the broadcast of Rob Gardner's
Lamb of God. I love this music so much! Our stake did this production several years ago and we bought the soundtrack. We often listen to it on Sundays. It is always powerful. But watching it at the lake house...listening to the gorgeous music ringing through the rafters, the beautiful accompanying artwork, reading the lyrics...as I looked out the window at the sun shining down on the lake and my mother's final resting place...made it not only extra powerful but an incredibly spiritual experience. I will never forget it. Tears were definitely shed but tears of joy and trust in the Lord. I hold tight to those promises.
“I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me though he were dead, yet shall he live: and whosoever liveth and believeth in me, shall never die.” (John 11:25-26)
This year we didn't have a visit from the Easter Bunny, Easter baskets, Easter Dresses/Ties, Easter Egg Hunts, or any of the usual trappings. The kids dyed eggs and they each got their favorite Easter candy which wasn't easy. This Easter was definitely a spiritual Easter. We had home church and took the sacrament at the lake house. I think my grandparents would be thrilled about that!! It felt sacred and holy. Just what we needed this year.

I decorated the table with some of my Mom's Easter decorations. Some of them we have had since I was a little girl. They made me happy to see on the table. I took pictures of them since we are dividing things up so who knows who will end up getting them. My mom wasn't a sentimental person so she didn't save much from our childhoods...we have very little furniture/dishes/things from the homes we grew up in. My mom loved to change things up. There isn't much left of things that were my grandparents. My mom's siblings took most of it. The majority of things that we are drawing for...furniture etc... are things that she purchased in the last few years or made. The things that mean the most to me and my siblings are the holiday decorations. But even those my mom went through and either donated to Goodwill or sold through our business. Things that remain mean a lot. They are tangible touchstones from our childhood.
Things like these:
Funny ceramics that my mom painted in the early 1970s. These are the few sentimental things that remain and that are highly prized. Isn't that funny? My mom would be shocked out of her mind that these are the types of things that we want. LOL.
Our menu included:
Mom's Coors Ham
My Potato Salad
Grandma's Cherry Jello Squares
Mom's Baked Beans
Grandma's Green Punch
Chocolate Cream Pies
The other thing that is most precious...family recipes...or knowing how to make favorite family dishes. I am so glad that I took the time to write down recipes (my mom didn't always do that) and learned how to make things under the tutelage of my Grandma and Mom. Nothing makes me feel closer to my family members who are gone than sitting around a table with people I love and eating their signature dishes.
One smell of this punch and I am 8 years old and back with my Grandma Ellersick.
Reilly and Hunter weren't there for various reasons which was disappointing and it wasn't a big family gathering but we did our best with our quarantine Easter and still had a good time!
Another family tradition...Ranch Dressing. It is so important that everyone must have their own personal ranch containers for maximum dipping. Ranch is served at nearly every family meal thanks to my Grandma! Ha ha!
Another tradition that we were not going to miss was the Easter Egg Toss:
This year the rules changed...all could toss and make a wish. We tossed them from the dock rather than from the shore.
This year we also lobbed them towards the cove where my mom's ashes were scattered and wished her a Happy Easter. Look at the pictures below and check out how each of us were encircled by rings of light...even orbs in the water! Kind of cool. :)
We got so many pictures like this today. I will not post the MANY *extra* awkward throwing pictures that we have but know that there were orbs in the water and rings of light in all of them.
We spent another night at the lake and paid to watch
Call of the Wild. Beverly went nuts the entire movie barking at the dogs!! It was pretty funny and also annoying!
